While you are in Turkey

Road safety in Turkey

Visitors who dream of an extraordinary vacation by taking advantage of the advanced highway network in Turkey should find out about certain rules and regulations for their own benefit.

Turkey’s unique and magnificent scenery is waiting to be explored by vacationers ready to take the road!

Car rental: Car rental companies in the immediate vicinity of the airport and the exit gates of the terminal as well as in numerous city centers and holiday resorts offer you the most suitable vehicle for a pleasant drive.

Lanes: As in many other countries in the world, Turkey drives on the right-hand side of the road. Drivers who check the mirrors as often as possible automatically improve their safety.

Seat belt and child seat: Driver and passengers are legally obliged to wear seat belts as soon as they get into the car and to wear seat belts until arriving at their destination. Likewise, for their own safety, children under 7 are legally required to sit in child seats.

Drunk driving: The legal alcohol limit for drivers is limited to 0.5 per thousand, as driving with drinks is prohibited in Turkey. Drivers convicted of driving while exceeding the legal alcohol limit run the risk of paying a fine of TL 700 and suspending their driving license for six months.

Cell Phones: For their own safety and that of their passengers, drivers are not allowed to use cell phones while driving. Using a cell phone while driving is prohibited by law and the penalty for violating this law is 74 TL.

Traveling To Destinations Outside Of Tourist Hubs: Turkey is like a puzzle to be solved as it hides numerous inland places and cities of interest waiting to be explored. It is advisable to use a GPS device and a road map, and to keep an eye on traffic signs at all times.

Tolls: Some of the main highways in Turkey are toll highways that can be used for a small fee at automated HGS (Fast Pass System) and OGS (Automatic Pass System) stations at the entrance and exit of the tolls.
