Sardes Turkey

Sardis, the capital of the Kingdom of Lydia, is located in the city of Salihli in the Manisa Province. Sardis was a major center of trade and commerce during the Hellenistic and Roman times and continued to maintain its importance as the center of the episcopate under Byzantine rule.

In the immediate vicinity are the hills of Bintepe, which were built as tombs for the kings and became famous in ancient times. Today Sardis and Bintepe are nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
